Also called White Globe Lily. The fairy lantern is in the same family as the more commonly seen and showier Mariposa Lily. A close look at the two flowers reveals the similarities.
The genus name of this flower comes from two Greek words: Calo, meaning beautiful, and Chortus, meaning grass. Albus means white and refers to the color of the flower. Hikers often pass by this beatiful flower mistaking it simply for tall grass. It is easy to miss but well worth watching for. The delicate beauty of this flower is striking in the otherwise arid landscape. |
