Family Longhorn Beetles (Cerambycidae) Size 1 1/2"-2"
Season Active in Summer Food
Habitat Deciduous woodlands

Also called the California Root Borer.

These rarely seen bugs are big -- really big. They are nocturnal and attracted to light. By day they tend to hide in loose bark and wood debris at the base of trees. The larvae are responsible for making some of that debris; they bore into the roots while eating them. Oddly, none of the references mention what the adult beetles eat.
